Americus, Kansas is a teeny tiny town northwest of Emporia, Kansas and is home to the Flint Hills Gravel Race. It has a population of 776, one stop light and a city park. It's smack dab in the middle of the Flint Hills of Kansas, and when we were there to shoot the gravel race, the farmers and ranchers were burning their fields to get ready for spring planting.  The smoke plumes could be seen (and smelled) for miles.  Part of the race wove through the abandoned town of Admire (with heavy emphasis on "AD-mire"). There were a few people still living in the little hamlet, but there were also a lot of cats hanging about.
I thought they each deserved a portrait.
Like always,  I took "just for me" photos like I do in nearly every event that my husband and I cover and my hope is that the images tell the story of  the weekend.
