Fort Gibson, located in eastern Oklahoma, was the furthest west of any American military fort at that time. It operated from 1824 until 1888. You can read the history of it here: Fort Gibson. After we toured the site, David and I stopped off for hamburgers and fries and ice cream at one of the best little joints in the area.
